A 16-year-old girl who was allegedly raped was tied to her suspected attacker and beaten while she was paraded though an Indian village by her family in order to shame her.
Harrowing video footage has emerged of the alleged rape victim being tied to the 21-year-old suspect with ropes, while a crowd chanted slogans and beat the girl in the Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh yesterday.
The girl was tied around her waist as dozens of men chanted ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’, which means ‘Long Live Mother India‘.
The alleged rape victim’s family were among those who forced her to make the humiliating walk with her suspected attacker – who is married with two children – to shame her, local media reported.
The girl was seen sat in front of her attacker with her head in her hands while surrounded by a crowd at one stage.
Six people, including the alleged rapist, were arrested by police after the video went viral and caused outrage.
Officers were able to free the girl when she was being paraded, police officer Dilip Singh Bilwal told local news agency PTI.
India’s abysmal record on sexual violence has been the focus of international attention since the 2012 gang-rape and murder of a student on a Delhi bus sparked nationwide protests.

In 2019, the country recorded 88 rape cases per day, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.
India’s top judge, Chief Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde, was facing calls to resign earlier this month after telling an accused rapist to marry his schoolgirl victim to avoid jail.
